Update: Apparently I should quote myself in my next entry, because I’ve done a dumb, dumb thing. While getting the keynote information from MacRumors, the presentation of the iPhone section sure seemed to imply a developer’s ability to create widgets: yes, these widgets were just HTML, AJAX and some iPhone-specific calls, but they were widgets, they lived on your phone’s desktop, and they could perhaps even utilize some basic local storage

You know what’s funny? I’d written the title to this blog last night (before the WWDC keynote). And in the wake of so many angry, frustrated responses, I appear nothing but prescient! But I’m not psychic; I’m realistic. Any Apple announcement cannot occur without being accompanied by wailing, crying, recrimination, Apple-cursing, and a (momentarily) tumbling stock price. It’s the AppleNewsRumors Death Spiral! (Perhaps related to but not to be confused with the Apple Product Cycle.)

To those not in the know: WWDC is Apple, Inc.’s Worldwide Developers Conference. It’s an event for programmers and engineers, primarily by programmers and engineers; consequently, it’s geared toward software and architecture news and information. As such, you wouldn’t really expect to hear much about consumer-level Apple products, would you? Of course not. Well, scratch that; some people would. For some reason, a hell of a lot of people:

A week ago it was doubtful that Apple was even going to allow any third party iPhone development. Now they’ve announced that you will, in fact, be able to utilize the iPhone’s phone and email services in your own applications (as well as other services, perhaps - we don’t know!) and it isn’t enough. What? You want Apple allow things like Java on the iPhone? Sounds awesome! You don’t want that nice sandbox, anyway; give me the enormous landfill instead! Yeah, it smells like shit and the view is terrible, but it’s so big! And, and think of all the stuff it has in it!

Is it any wonder that Apple’s Dashboard has been a success, while things like Yahoo’s Desktop Engine (format Konfabulator) have been received mostly tepidly? It’s the same argument – web engines vs. programming languages. The lack of Java may get your panties in a twist, but in reality Apple has just announced it’s bringing iPhone development to everyone! It’s like mobile Hypercard, baby! And this is supposed to be a bad thing?!

Disappointment over the keynote address was not limited to the lack of consumer announcements or iPhone-related disclosures. No, it stands to reason that a fair number of complaints would focus on Leopard, Apple’s forthcoming operating system, which was the keynote’s primary subject.

@ MacRumors: Amazing how the hype machine built up our expectations. Apple stock was up all morning but shortly after the end of the keynote it started dropping about 3%.

We got some eye candy, some new user interface interaction, a bunch of unified GUIs, enhancements to features we already knew about, Safari on Windows (!) and a lot of polish.
